Comfort Food

It didn’t get below freezing overnight but it was cold enough to make me want to spend the day hunkered down by the fire. And why not put that fire to good use? Time I made some bread:

First make the sponge: rye flour, scalded milk and yeast:

By the fire to rise. Don’t know who was the cozier, me or the bread:

The the second rising:

One loaf baked in a cast iron pot over the coals:

The others, mini loaves from the electric oven:

An odd loaf from the fireplace – underdone on the top:

Over-done but oh so crispy and tasting like toast on the bottom:

Looking good from this angle. We had it sliced within five minutes of removal from the pot:

Comfort food for sure. Who could resist – low carb diets be damned! Next weekend I’ll try moose stew in the cast iron pot.
