Engagement Ring Bling #8

Or Judy’s Day Off.

This week’s ring, with its three magnificent 100% pure glass stones, must have brought me luck – I might be reluctant to trade it in next week. I awoke on Wednesday to find it as warm as summer outside, my income tax returned, and it was a rare midweek day off from work. Polly’s Cove beckoned and the number three was the theme for the day. In my writing class last week our homework was to describe a period of time using sentences containing only three words. I read my own writing to the class and then listened to the others read their three word sentence creations and by the end of the night it seemed it was the only way to write.  As I hiked the cove I was driven to jot down words in groups of three. Here’s how it went:

Sun shines bright. Temperature heads up. Delicious day off. Angel says “housework”. Devil says “adventure”. Devil wins out. Polly’s Cove beckons. Where is wind?  Ballcap over braid. Trail is dry. Rubber boots hot. Rubber boots flap. Knees creak and crack. Spruce root stairs. Patellae tracks poorly. Granite holds heat. Flat water beckons. Boat off shore. Water like oil. Time to rest.

Golden kelp undulates. Golden kelp crackles. Hiss of swells. Sheltered from wind. Shirt comes off. Forgot my pen. Use coloured pencil. Purple will do. Back on trail. Flotsam and jetsam. Balloon ribbon bouquet. Rope looks better. Yellow and red. Trapped in rocks. Glad for knife.Moss like velvet. Thinking of Henry. That’s Henry eighth. I feel portly. Short of breath. Make mental note. Good kayak route. Good camping spot. Two boats offshore. Time to rest.

Ring in rock. No bling ring. Wave scoured granite. Legs like rubber. Heart works hard. Looks like stone. Take it home? It’s just foam! Turn back now. Why up hill? All up hill! Must sit still. time to rest.

Air is hot. Lips are dry. Smell of diesel. Where’s my Coke?!! Peanut toffee buzz. Scritch of pencils. Breeze on back.  Trill of birds. Picture all done. Pack up pencils. Time to leave.

The challenge next time will be to write the whole thing  in rhyming sentences of three words. I wonder if that’s how Dr. Seuss got started. To reward myself for the work-out I spent three delicious hours in the hammock. Amazing that it was only March and I didn’t even need a sweater.

Ring Bling in and on the sun.

Today’s Blog entry was brought to you by the number 3.

Ski-doo ride yesterday. Off to cabin. Down through woods. Not enough snow. Alders slapping face. Death defying leaps! Jumping over springs. Flying over lakes. Frozen of course! Down this hill? Way too steep! Let me off!!! Fresh moose tracks. Open water there? Don’t need swim. Finally at cabin. Peaceful salt water. Not a sound. Two black ducks! Huge ice pans. No eagles today. Light wood stove. Cup of tea. Could stay forever. Walk on wharf. Time to go? Back on trail. Home at dark. What a day! Go again tomorrow?

Big sister, I love your world! Amazing how nostalgic I get when I read the three simple words ‘cup of tea’. Especially when it is enjoyed by the heat of a wood stove. I’ll pass on the ski-doo ride but a walk down the wharf to view the ice pans would please me very much – I miss a real Nfld winter sometimes.
