Happy Mailboxing Day 2016

Here in rural Florida they still deliver mail right to the mailbox at your house. If you put the little flag up they will even stop and pick up any mail you need posted. It is such a convenience that I dare not speak too loudly about it lest they stop. Mail is not the only thing you find in your mailbox. Last year after we first arrived, I first opened the box to find a huge shiny brown Florida cockroach. They are almost two inches long. This year I found a small lizard had taken up residence. I almost had to get a court order to get him to leave.

Cornered.

I wonder what horrible stories the postal workers can tell about beasts and critters they have encountered on their deliveries. Does it cheer them, I wonder, to see the mailboxes decorated for Christmas? (The postal workers, not the critters)

Theme mailboxes are very popular down here:

The Alligator mailbox.

The manatee mailbox.

And of course they have to decorate those too.

But really, this is just plain manatee mailbox abuse:

Manatee Elvis mailbox.

Seriously though. I just love this time of year when I find the mailbox full of Christmas cards, some with great newsy letters enclosed. I love to sit back with a small glass of wine and catch up on all of your annual adventures.

Whaaat? Maybe not so small a glass, but I’m only having one!!
