Glassy Beach

…..in which a group of us spend an afternoon on Glassy Beach.

There are lots of cool places to visit in Newfoundland if you get off the beaten path.

This is not your typical cottage.

One of my new favourite places to go is glassy beach.

Simple pleasures are always the most fun.

Now don’t get too excited; Glassy Beach is not much of a beach in the usual sense. There is no sand and nary a sun bather; it is just a rough patch between two outcroppings of igneous rock.

Actually the rocks are pretty interesting in themselves. Much of Notre Dame Bay is made up of ancient volcano.

I contemplate the events which may have caused these layers.

But what makes Glassy Beach so delightful is the glass.

Beach glass galore.

Beach glass galore.

It used to be over a foot deep but scavengers have made off with it by the wheelbarrow load and every year it gets more and more depleted despite the sign asking people not to remove anything. There is no longer a dump around the corner to replenish the supply.

It was fun to try and decipher the fragments with writing.

There is more than just glass there. You can find lots of interesting pottery fragments as well.

Gregory finds a piece with his initial while Pete swears he found a fragment of Moses' tablet.

No end to the fun to be had!

I loves Glassy Beach.
