Jamestown VA

If you’re not into the bare bones of an archaeological dig, especially on a cold day, then you would probably find the Jamestown Settlement museum more to your liking. It is associated with a gallery of exhibits but the highlight is the living history area where you will find a Powhatan Indian Village, A Colonial fort and replicas of the three ships which sailed from England in 1607. I was glad for the cold weather because it kept the crowds down and we wandered through at our leisure, avoiding the actors for the most part. They were very informative but I didn’t like to stand in one spot that long.

I was not in a picture taking mood apparently but here are a few snaps of things which caught my attention; boats and birds.

I thought my boat took a lot of elbow grease but it had nothing on controlled burning and then scraping with an oyster shell like this dug-out canoe in the works.

Later in the day we went to the folk art gallery in Williamsburg. I only took three pictures and once again they were peculiar choices. Of all the whimsical, elaborate and highly decorated objects to be found there, I have no idea why I was inspired to photograph the rhino/hippo with the record player in its back or the happy baby in the high chair. The hippo is reminiscent of the ancient piggy like things I photographed in DC. I seem to be on a theme.

Stay tuned for a tour of the Jamestown glass factory, the highlight of my visit.
