Boatbuilding 2

The wherry now has hatch holes; one forward and one aft. wherry in progress It took me half a day to work up to cutting them. It meant more work with a power tool and an error here would be most visible. I don’t think I drew a breath until they were finished. The cut-outs become the hatch covers. The long sticks are the rub-rails which I glued up while I had fresh epoxy mixed. They will be glued and nailed into place once the hatches are done. hatch sills in hiding Under those bricks are the hatch sills on which the hatch covers will rest. I am down to about three tablespoons of epoxy hardener and that is of the batch I had to buy because I ran out. My ignorance in how much to mix and how thick to apply has cost me dearly. C’est la vie. I have gotten rather good at it now and have very little wastage. That said I believe I will be two small batches short. Grrr.

Just imagine what I can stow in those hatches. Picnics and beverages, my Hennessey hammock tent, fishing gear. All manner of fun things. But not until spring I am afraid, even though it was twenty degrees outside today. I can wait; there are other adventures in the making to take us through the rest of the fall and winter. But more on that later.
