To Build a Boat (kit) Day 3

I totally forgot to take a picture before I shut down for the night. The bulk of the project was covered in plastic for the night when I just ran back out to take a couple of shots. It was a long day. I didn’t get to start until after lunch and once again, the prep time was significant. Reading the manual a couple of times really paid off as once I got started I was ready. But before that I had to go buy bricks to use as weights. No way could I get by without them as my work surfaces weren’t perfectly level. I am keeping my fingers crossed. All I can say now is that if the epoxy in the puzzle joints sets up as well as the left-over epoxy in the cup did, it will be bullet proof.

Here’s a picture of the port side of the tent. Panels number 3. These were the first I glued up and I don’t think I drew a full breath until they were done.

And a closer view of my brick set up

I put them in plastic bags after I noticed the ton of crumbs they left in the back of the car, not to mention the ant eggs. I saw one little ant running like heck with an egg down inside a little hole in the back of the backseat. He’ll probably find enough crumbs down there to feed his new colony. The bricks also delivered my first injury as I cut my finger on the sharp edge of one of them. T’would be very sad to get a blood stain on that fresh new wood. Any suggestions as to what to do with two dozen bricks after I’m done using them for weights?

Here are the bulkheads. They have strips glued along their tops called doublers to give extra support to the decks. Yes, I know I’m risking it with the dollar store clamps but they will have to do. The book calls for 60 clamps. I don’t think I could find that many in Liverpool even if I dug through everyone’s garages and basements. Might be touch and go later when I need maximum support.

Can’t wait to get up tomorrow and rush out to see if the glue “took”. It needs 24 hours to set so I might have to build another workshop to work in while I’m waiting. All very exciting so far. Sorry about the poor quality of the photos tonight.

And I thought you could just click that boat together! Hahaaaaaaa You are truly an artiste!! My suggestion for the bricks – heat them in your fireplace and put in your bed to beat the winter chill.

Methinks you could use that event tent by celebrating with a grand old bash once that beautiful wherry is in the water!! May I suggest cod tongues, squid rings, toutons, baked beans, fishermans brewis and Screech on the menu.
